June 10-16: Alma 5-7

Topics: 1) Checking in with yourself; 2) Personal authority; 3) The word of God was liberal; and 4) Women’s exclusion.

Welcome to "Things I Wish I Could Say in Sunday School," where we delve into unconventional thoughts and ideas that often go unspoken. In this episode, we focus on themes such as self-assessment, personal authority, and the liberal nature of God's word, while also addressing women's exclusion in religious contexts.

We start with Alma's call to repentance in chapter 5, analyzing the impact of his rhetorical questions and the potential for guilt and shame. We question the necessity of setting impossible standards and emphasize God's unconditional love.

Next, we discuss the importance of internal authority over external authority. We consider how developing personal beliefs through sincere questions can foster genuine internal growth.

In chapter 6, we reflect on the inclusivity of God's word and challenge the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' historical and current exclusionary practices. We ponder what true inclusivity would look like in practice.

Finally, in chapter 7, we examine the language that suggests women and children were viewed as possessions or were excluded from religious gatherings. We question how this aligns with the idea that God's word is meant for all.
